Texas Man Shot by Vice President Cheney in 2006 Still Waiting for Apology
October 14, 2010 7:50 AM
ABC News’ Karen Travers reports:
Nearly five years after being shot by Vice President Cheney on a hunting trip, Harry Whittington is still waiting for an apology.
Now 82, Whittington tells The Washington Post’s Paul Fahri in an extensive interview that he still has about 30 pieces of birdshot inside him, remnants from the Feb. 2006 shooting incident that happened on a south Texas ranch.
Fahri reports that Whittington’s injuries were “more dire than previously disclosed.”
Four days after the shooting, the birdshot near his heart cause it to “beat erratically” and Whittington was admitted back into the intensive care unit. Whittington’s doctors said he suffered a mild heart attack, but he downplayed it as a heart “event.”
He also suffered a collapsed lung and doctors performed invasive exploratory surgery to check his vital organs for damage.
“The load from Cheney's gun came close to, but didn't damage, the carotid artery in his neck,” Fahri reports. “A rupture could have been fatal, particularly since it took the better part of an hour to transport him from the vast Armstrong ranch to the Kingsville hospital.”
But perhaps the most stunning revelation in the article is that nearly five years later, Whittington is still waiting for an apology from Cheney.
When asked if Cheney ever said sorry to him, Whittington “who has been talking about his life and career for hours, suddenly draws silent.”
"I'm not going to go into that," he says sharply after a short pause.
Fahri writes that Whittington is “too gracious to say it out loud, but he doesn't dispute the notion, either.”
The circumstances of the 2006 shooting were illustrative of the way Cheney operated for eight years at the White House – flying under the public radar and keeping the press at a distance.
Cheney’s office worked in a completely separate orbit from the Bush White House. While the president always has a group of reporters traveling with him, the same rules did not apply for the vice president (and do not now for Vice President Biden).
Cheney often took trips that the public and press are not aware of – hunting trips, fishing trips or just visits to his home in Jackson Hole, WY.
The shooting happened on a Saturday evening but the Vice President did not speak to investigators until the next morning.
Cheney’s office did not inform the media about the shooting until after it was reported in a local Texas paper. The vice president did not comment publicly for several days.
Cheney said that week that it was the “right call” to disseminate the information through Katharine Armstrong, the daughter of the ranch's owner and a witness to the shooting. Armstrong contacted her local newspaper on Sunday morning.
The vice president said at the time that he knew there was no way to minimize the story but he wanted to make sure it was as accurate as possible.
“I don't know who you could get better as the basic source for the story than the witness who saw the whole thing,” the Vice President said to Fox News on Feb. 15, 2006. He said that Armstrong probably knew better than he did what happened because he had “only seen one piece of [the shooting].”
The White House was informed about the incident the evening that it occurred but then-spokesman Scott McClellan said they left it to the vice president’s office to take the lead on disseminating information to the press.
Today’s story in the Post raises questions about whether the circumstances of the accident “may have pushed the limits of safety,” because the group was hunting at dusk and visibility may have been poor; Cheney may not have had a clear line of fire before shooting, and there may have been alcohol involved.
Cheney admitted four days after the shooting that he had a beer at lunch but insisted that nobody was under the influence during the hunt.
“No. You don’t hunt with people who drink. That’s not a good idea,” Cheney said in an interview with Fox News on Feb. 15, 2006.
After the incident, Whittington was consistently referred to as an “old friend” and “hunting buddy” of Cheney’s. But now the Texas man says they barely knew each other and had met briefly just three times since the mid-1970s.
"The most you could say is that he was an acquaintance," Whittington tells the Post.

ncpilot,
You're hawking and defending politicians left and right, Cheney, Hillary Clinton. Careful. Somebody might realize you're just a politician-loving, Republican gov't loving fool.
Since we're tripping down memory lane with Cheney, remember this from '04: "Creepier than Nixon:The man who brought down Richard Nixon says Bush and "co-president" Cheney are an even greater threat to the country." David Talbot, Salon

Using past information and twisting it to get an edge should be illeagal. You guys at ABC are some times too much to take and your credibility goes down the drain with the rest of your news. It gets to a point that we the people can't and won't take too much more of the dirty spin and we will look else where to get our information and you will be out of business.

The reality, and what nobody on here seems to remember, is that for some bizarre reason, Harry Whittington issued an apology to Cheney during a press conference right after the incident. Back when it happened, I remember many people were dumbfounded that the man, who was shot in the face, was the one apologizing publically, instead of the other way around.

The word, 'advertisement', regression, is at the top of the article that I cut and pasted for your edification. I knew it would throw you, but didn't realize it would throw you THAT much. The article if from Rasmussen. You may think he's too right wing, but the fact of the matter, is that rasmussen has a much better polling accuracy then the ones you mentioned. BUT, if you were able to actually analyze what you post, and understand polls, you would have realized that the polls are saying pretty much the same thing: That the Dems have a favorable rating of about 35% and the GOP, about 33.5 %. Since you either can't or won't do the math, here it is: the Dems have a non-favorable rating of 65%, and the GOP one of 67.5%. Pretty much what you say your polls indicate. so why the rebuttle? Because you cannot understand polls? The most important thing, though, mr. regression, is the DIRECTIOn that the respective polls are going. The GOP is GAINING approval while the DEMs are LOSING approval. That's the crux of the matter.

Regarding most secretive admin in history ever (flunked history?or were home schooled by ultraconservative Texans? ):
"Dr. Patrice McDermott, director of Open the Government, a watchdog group, told IPS, "The federal government under the Bush administration has shown its commitment to secrecy by where it has put its money – more no-bid contracts, fewer government employees processing FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] requests, less on training on classification issues, and almost 200 dollars spent on keeping secrets to every dollar allocated to open them."
"Given our growing deficit, the next administration faces difficult choices in restoring accountable government," he added. (William Fisher)

But if your abc and others you will find a way to lie about to gain a vote." Posted by: Jim Rod............You might want to check you facts on this one Jimmy. Cheney has never apologized on national TV to anyone for anything. I looked it up and I suggest you do the same before you pull any information out of your butt. As a matter of fact Whittington apologized to Cheney for being shot and causing distress to Cheney's family. Isn't that something?

Why this story now and just a few weeks from Mid Term Elections??? It's a story designed to make Republicans look uncaring and insensitive, pure and simple. This is a personal story that would better have been left addressed between the two.

".i don't know where you get your factoids from concerning Republican approval, but here is the true story: :Advertisement"
Yay, disclosure!
I like that you pointed out you were running an advertisement for the Republican party right up front.
You are less secretive than the party you're trying to sell.
One source for my assertion that the GOP is highly unpopular:
Congressional Connection Poll,
60 Percent Disapproval Of GOP Leaders
Bloomberg Poll
"The poll finds Republicans in an anomalous position — poised to make political gains while the party and its policies are unpopular. That stands in contrast to midterm elections in 1994 [...]
In the Bloomberg Poll, nearly half of likely voters — 49 percent — said they had an unfavorable view of the Republicans. Democrats have a narrow advantage on favorability, 47 percent to 45 percent.

and regression......thank YOU for your entertaining antics. Finally, the libs are starting to show at least SOME diversity in their whining....at least some of you are reading off of different lib-sites and introducing new, if faulted, arguments. And just as I say that, there's another of your old-school liberals recycling the old, "it's bush's fault" mantra and complaining that obama inherited a mess. He knew the "mess" for what it was before he ran. He should have known that he was not man enough to solve the 'mess' and should have let Hillary take the office.

> I don't need to refute the fact that there is secrecy abounding. Anyone who has been in the least bit interested in politics for the past 2 years can see those political tricks of the past have been going on by the current occupant of the White House. He lies, he bribes, and he threatens. He is and has been a continuation of the last 2 years of the bush administration. So refuting secrecy? No, I don't think that's necessary nor honest. We have the most secretive administration in history. But, not to worry, things will start to change in 2 weeks and a couple of days. Then will REALLY change in 2 more years.

Anyone who seriously thinks President Obama created this economic mess is seriously out of their mind. Republicans inherited a surplus from Democrats and thrashed the American economy so bad, that it now has a deficit. Republicans left President Obama with high umemployment figures that were only bound to go up regardless of who took over from President Bush. I'd Say President Obama is making the best of a tremendioulsy bad situation he inherited. I seriously doubt Senator McCain and Governor Palin or anyone for that matter would have done any better.
Look arround you it's a global recession. France is protesting against Pensions, Japan's economy isnt great, Great Britian's econonmy isnt great. Any Leader that is in Office arround the world with a manageable economy should really be comended for helping minimize the effects of this recession.Things really could be worse than they are.
God bless America and help our political Leaders solve this mess of an economy, because regardless of who is in power the people are still suffering.

I've read the article and am still trying to figure out its relevance. It's bizarre that it would suddenly pop up on the radar screen after having been written about and settled years ago. I'm not into conspiracy theories but it would make sense to bring up this nonsense as a way of distracting the (few) Americans who visit this site from the realities of record-breaking unemployment, rising costs of health insurance, and the utter mess Obama is making of our country.

"and regressing....for ANY liberal to complain about "secrecy" from the GOP is akin to a skunk complaining about the smell of a wet dog. "
Premature trigger pulling must be deeply ingrained, your many excuses aside.
Despite your colorful analogy, you haven't refuted the fact that we're regressing to Nixonian political tricks and that at the moment, because its politically expedient for them to do so, the GOP is pushing secrecy over disclosure, transparency and fair elections. Moreover its a pattern that existed during the Bush-Cheney administration.
The Bush-Cheney and Nixon administrations weren't only frowned upon by libruls, by the way, but also libertarians, progressives, moderates, and a majority of the country. A majority of the country is also concerned about secrecy when it comes to donations, the secrecy Rove is hawking on Republican news sources.

Jo Ann, he DID apologize. Period. That should be end of story, except for the Pavlovian responders to this non story. And as far as your statement that "If you or I shot someone accidently, we would have been arrested, tried, and spending time...." Well, that's just not true. Hunting accidents happen all the time. A friend of mine accidently shot a hunting partner. He was neither arrested, charged, nor convicted. If all you have left is to make up lies, or post what you THINK would have happened, then, again, I thank you for the entertainment.

Posted by: pt | Oct 14, 2010 11:15:14 AM
What's amazing to me is that Jake Trapper is usually one of the harshest critics of the Obama Administration, and the republicans salivate at what Jake has to say. But now he posts a story making Cheney look like a cold, arrogant #### and the republicans are up in arms about it. Republicans need to come to terms with the fact that Cheney LIED and DECIEVED us willingly and knowingly and somehow they are still fine with it. Republicans claim that Obama leis on a regular basis, and maybe he does for all we know. But none of Obama's lies got us into these TWO wars nor ruined our economy. Cheney also shot a man in the face with a shotgun and NEVER apologized. For those of you who passionately say that he did apologize, weren't even there. Whittington however was there and he was "silent" when asked, which equals a big resounding NO. Why do republicans even want to associate themselves with a man like Cheney anyway? He doesn't care about anyone but Cheney and the evidence of that speaks for itself.
Posted by: LND | Oct 14, 2010 11:14:51 AM
If you or I have shot someone, "accidentally" we would have been charged, sentenced and spending time in Jail. NOT Cheney, just another cover up by the political machine.
HEY Cheney, be a man, apologize to Mr.Whittington. that will never happen, oh wait, you have HURT a lot of AMERICANS by your policies, prejudicial attitudes, hate messages.

Partisan Trends: Democrats 35.0% Republicans 33.8% Gap Smallest in Five Years
Wednesday, September 01, 2010 Email to a Friend ShareThis.Advertisement
The number of Republicans in the United States grew in August while the number of Democrats slipped a bit and the gap between the parties fell to the smallest advantage for Democrats in five years.
In August, 35.0% of American Adults identified themselves as Democrats. That’s down nearly half a percentage point from a month ago and is the smallest percentage of Democrats ever recorded in nearly eight years of monthly tracking.
At the same time, the number of Republicans grew in August to 33.8%. That’s up two full percentage points from the month before and the largest number of Republicans recorded in 2010." Looks to me like it's the Dems that are falling out of grace with the public.

Dear ABC News
Placing this story on your political blog at this time only hurts what dwindling credibility you currently have. Why are we hearing about this now? Why isn't this in your Fluffy Pop Culture Blogs? Does anything a past, current or future political figure does finds it's way here? Is President Bush #1 going on a fishing trip anytime soon. Will he get a hook stuck in his finger? How's John Edward's out of wedlock love child doing? Wasn't there a Birthday recently?

The story is an out and out lie by its author. Cheney appologized IMMEDIATELY after the accident as he tended to Whittington awaiting the ambulance. And he apologized again in the hospital. To borrow the words of a recent poster: This story serves as a metaphor to what the MSM and the Lemming-crats are doing to TRUTH in our nation. The MSM prints up blatant lies or "almost truths", feeds them to the salivating herd, and then watch as the herd adds their "Knowledgeabl Komments" on the story. From the article published Reb 15, 2006, 2 days after the accident: "Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president visited with Whittington and his wife at the hospital on Sunday afternoon. After the visit, a vice presidential spokesman said Cheney is "pleased Mr Whittington is in good shape and good spirits."
Whittington sent word through a hospital official that he would have no comment on the incident out of respect for Cheney.
Armstrong said Cheney was very apologetic after the shot, held Whittington's face and cleaned up the blood.">>>> Now, for those of you who would rather jump to conclusions about whether of not Cheney ever appologized.....don't you feel USED by ABCNews tabloid now? But go on,,,keep up your ranting and foolish babble. This is all the Dems have left....and in 2 weeks, it'll all be over except for your tears.
